Lovers in a Dangerous Time: Erotic Art and Safer Sex

The tradition of erotic art is extensive though seldom explored as the basis for contemporary exhibitions. As their contribution to the global dialogue on sexual health, a group of Peterborough artists have taken on the challenge of creating work celebrating loving, caring, interactions and intimacy, as well as sex as something that can be flirtatious, frivolous, humorous, sensuous and life-enhancing.

Most Western-led discussions about sexual health have focused on warnings of "what not to do."  In this exhibition the artists focus instead on sexual pleasures that can be experienced with less risk. There are challenges in addressing pleasure in safer-sex work: how people experience pleasure is influenced by power structures such as gender, class, and race as well as by the globalized media. In this visual exploration of safer sex we see the need to take account of how pleasure is constructed, as well as the diversity of how pleasure is experienced by individuals in different contexts. The exhibition includes both representations of and allusions to ways of engaging in loving, safe interactions.

The intention is to explore eroticism in 2006: provoke thought, stimulate discussion and provide practical inspiration.  This exhibition of art embraces the opportunity to celebrate life forces, our bodies, the essence of human creativity, and attempts to raise awareness of these important issues.
